Veterinary Surgeons should be familiar with the legislation surrounding the use of x-ray apparatus (Radiation Protection and Control Act 1982 and its Regulations).
X-ray apparatus must be registered with the Environment Protection Authority, and a licence is required to operate equipment. Applications for both apparatus and licenses to operate x-ray equipment is through the Radiation Protection Branch of the Environment Protection Authority. Forms and information can be accessed at http://www.environment.sa.gov.au/epa/radiation.html.
Copies of X-rays
X-rays are considered to be the property of the veterinary surgeon (or owner of practice). Though they are considered to be an integral part of the patient's clinical record, the X-ray is not required to be provided to the client if they request a copy of the clinical record for their animal.
When a client has sought a second opinion, a copy of the animal's clinical record should be provided to the veterinarian upon request (ie owners, or second veterinarian). Any X-rays should also be provided with the clinical records - but they should be returned to the first veterinarian unless advised otherwise. |
